Buying a Wall-Hung Toilet? Here’s Every Component You Need

A wall-hung toilet looks simple once it is installed: a bowl, a seat, and a flush plate. Buying the complete system takes a little more planning, because the tank and supporting frame sit behind the wall—and may be sold separately from the toilet you see online.

For a residential wall-hung toilet with a concealed tank, you need a compatible bowl, an in-wall carrier and tank, a flush actuator, a suitable seat, and the specified mounting and connection components. Your installer also supplies the framing and site plumbing. An electronic bidet seat adds its own water, power, and compatibility requirements.178

The buying challenge is knowing which of those items are already included. Use this guide to build your order, avoid duplicates, and identify what needs to be settled before rough-in.

The complete wall-hung toilet buying checklist

This checklist covers concealed-tank systems commonly considered for home bathrooms. Commercial flushometer installations have different requirements.

Package contents vary. Geberit’s Sigma 2×6 system, for example, includes the frame, tank, internal fill and flush valves, water supply stop, drainage elbow, and mounting hardware. The bowl and flush actuator are separate selections.1 Seat inclusion depends on the bowl: Icera lists a seat with its Vista C-5530.5

1. Choose the carrier and tank for your wall

The carrier is the supporting frame behind the toilet. In a concealed-tank installation, it also holds the cistern—the tank that supplies the flush. A bowl listing alone does not establish which carrier your bathroom needs.

Start by asking your installer to identify the available wall space. Geberit offers different systems for 2×4 and 2×6 construction, plus shorter Omega systems for pre-wall applications.2 A pre-wall is an additional wall built in front of the existing one to accommodate the installation.

Bring these questions to your contractor before selecting a carrier:

• Can the system fit inside the existing wall, or does the design need an additional wall in front?

• Is a full-height carrier suitable, or is there a window, shelf, or other obstruction above it?

• Where will the drain, vent, and water supply run?

• What will the finished wall and floor thicknesses be?

These choices affect the installation layout. Geberit’s planning guide treats framing, wall thickness, actuator selection, and seat height as related decisions.3

Ordering tip: Put the full carrier model number on the quote. “Geberit carrier” leaves too much unresolved. The brand name alone does not specify the wall arrangement, tank family, or flushing configuration.

2. Match the bowl to the carrier and flush volume

A bowl can look right for the room and still be the wrong match for the concealed system. Confirm the pairing using the manufacturers’ current documentation for the exact models.

Cross-brand combinations are possible. Geberit’s Sigma 2×6 specification sheet identifies compatible bowls from manufacturers including TOTO, Duravit, and Icera. It also separates combinations by flushing configuration.4 That gives you design flexibility, but it is not blanket approval for every bowl from those brands.

Before adding a bowl to your cart, confirm:

• The complete bowl model number, including relevant suffixes.

• The carrier and tank model it will connect to.

• The specified flush volume for that combination.

• The bowl’s projection and mounting dimensions.

For a small bathroom, compare the proposed finished wall position plus bowl projection with your current layout. Looking only at the bowl’s depth can give an incomplete picture when an additional wall is needed.

Ask for a model-specific compatibility check if a description says only “fits most carriers.” A clear written pairing is more useful than a broad marketing claim.

3. Select a flush plate that matches the concealed tank

The flush plate operates the tank behind the wall. Choose its system compatibility before choosing its finish.

For Geberit’s standard plate families, the rule is straightforward: Sigma plates go with Sigma systems; Omega plates go with Omega systems. Geberit explicitly states that a Sigma system is not compatible with an Omega plate.6

The bowl’s brand does not determine the plate. If an approved TOTO bowl is paired with a Geberit Sigma tank, the flush control must suit the Geberit tank.

Also decide early if you want a plate that sits level with the wall surface, a remote button, or an electronic control. These can have additional installation requirements. For example, Geberit identifies a separate rough-in set for Sigma60 surface-even mounting.7

Browse flush actuator plates once you know your tank family. Include the exact finish code on your order; a photograph is not enough to distinguish similar chrome, nickel, or black finishes.

4. Check whether the toilet seat is included

Never assume that a seat shown in a product photograph is included in the purchase. Check the listing and the manufacturer’s specification sheet for the exact model.

For a concrete example, the Icera Vista C-5530.01 in white is listed by Icera with a slow-close, quick-release seat and cover. Its carrier is not included. Icera’s specification sheet also identifies replacement seat S-2129.01 for that model.5

That is a useful distinction: buying this bowl does not mean you need to add a second standard seat, but it also does not give you a complete in-wall system.

For bowls supplied without a seat, select the manufacturer-specified option or a documented compatible alternative. “Elongated” describes a general shape; it is not a complete seat compatibility specification.

If you want a bidet seat, choose it while planning the bowl and carrier rather than treating it as a last-minute accessory.

5. Account for connectors and installation accessories

The small components deserve a line-by-line check. Geberit’s accessory range includes bowl connection sets, seals, mounting accessories, and fittings for different drainage arrangements.7

Have your installer compare the carrier’s supplied-parts list with the installation requirements. Some items will already be in the box; others depend on the bathroom.

Buy the parts required by the selected installation, rather than adding every accessory shown beside the product. Ask the installer to identify both the part number and who will supply it. This prevents missing items without paying twice for components already included.

6. Plan an electronic bidet seat before the wall is closed

An electronic bidet seat requires more than a comfortable fit on the bowl. It needs a suitable water connection and electrical supply. TOTO’s WASHLET installation guidance specifies cold water and a grounded, GFCI-protected electrical outlet for the products covered by that manual.8

For a wall-hung installation, have your plumber and electrician confirm the routing and outlet location for the exact seat model. Do not assume the familiar connection beside a floor-mounted toilet will be available in the same place.

Geberit offers model-specific water-supply accessories for bidet seats, which is another reason to identify the carrier before ordering accessories.7

If you may add a bidet later, ask the installer what can be prepared now. Decide whether you want exposed or concealed connections, then confirm that the intended bowl and seat support that arrangement. A general “bidet-ready” description is not a substitute for matching the actual products.

Suppose you like the Icera Vista C-5530.01. Your shopping list starts with the bowl and its included standard seat. You would then select a compatible carrier/tank and a flush control for that tank.15

Decisions to settle before rough-in

The visible fixtures may be installed later, but several purchasing decisions affect the work behind the wall.

Agree on the finished seat height. Give your installer the intended bowl and seat models, plus the finished floor build-up. Seat height and ceramic rim height are different measurements; Geberit’s planning guide accounts for seat thickness when setting the carrier.3

Confirm the flush control. Share the actual plate or control model, particularly if you want a recessed or remote arrangement. Do not leave that specification until after tiling.37

Plan maintenance access. On Geberit systems, the flush plate provides access to the internal working parts for routine service.2 Remote controls still need an accessible service opening; Geberit offers removable cover plates for that purpose.9

Frequently asked questions

Does a wall-hung toilet come with the tank?

Not necessarily. A bowl can be sold separately from the carrier and concealed tank. Geberit sells its in-wall system with the compatible bowl as a separate selection.1 Read the package contents for the exact listing you are buying.

Can I use a TOTO or Duravit bowl with a Geberit carrier?

Some combinations are listed as compatible by Geberit. Check the exact bowl model and flushing configuration in the current carrier documentation; the brand name alone is insufficient.4

Can I use a Sigma flush plate on an Omega tank?

No. Geberit’s standard Sigma and Omega plates match their respective concealed systems.6 Identify an existing tank before ordering a replacement plate.

Do you have to remove tiles to service a concealed tank?

Routine access to Geberit’s fill and flush valves is through the removable flush or cover plate.29 That does not mean every possible repair to concealed plumbing can be completed through that opening. Keep the designed access point available.

How should I compare the cost of two wall-hung toilet options?

Compare the complete product lists: bowl, seat, carrier/tank, flush control, and additional accessories. Then compare installation costs using the same scope. A low bowl price and a package price are not directly comparable.
